Sedimentation Technique

Sedimentation

When a heavier component in a mixture settles after water is added to it, the process is called sedimentation. The heavier insoluble particles that settle down at the bottom of the liquid are called sediment. This method depends upon the difference in densities of the two components in the mixture. For example: dirt particles present in muddy water tend to settle at the bottom after sometime due to the process of sedimentation.

After the dirt particles settle down at the bottom, water is poured into another container. This process of separating a liquid from the sediment by carefully pouring it into another container is called decantation.

From a mixture of two immiscible liquids, such as a mixture of oil and water, the components  can also be separated by decantation.

Sedimentation is used in waste water treatment plant to remove the solids that cannot be broken down along with liquid waste.

Separating insoluble solids from liquids is known as sedimentation.
